4/20 Poster Pop-Up show!

Canablis: Celebrating Cannabis and Head Shop Culture in San Francisco.

The Head shops of the 60’s and 70’s were stores that specialized in all things cannabis. From bongs, pipes and papers, to posters, records, incense and the like; head shops acted as emporiums for communities of counter culturalists. Whether as concert ticket sales venues, distribution locales for underground literature, or meeting places for activist groups like the Diggers, San Francisco head shops played an important and influencing role in the culture of the time–where free love, drugs, and psychedelic music reigned supreme. The birth of the headshop arguably began with the legendary Psychedelic Shop on Haight Street, which opened in 1966. More than 50 years later, our Haight Street office space features a special 4/20 collection of 13 posters from the SF head shops and cannabis culture of the 60’s and 70’s. Featuring pieces from artists such as Rick Griffin, Irene McHugh and Bob Fried, the posters on display are original examples of those that would have been available for purchase in the shops. These posters likely decorated the walls of counter-culturalists’ college dorm walls at Berkeley, music studios, and groovy apartments all around the city. They, along with gig posters of the time would help to create the environment and vibe most amenable to partaking in the green. It never hurts to have something trippy to look at.
